How to add an autumnal colour palette to your home

By Emily Harnasz on

As the leaves start to fall and the air turns crisper, it's the perfect time to bring in the atmospheric, enchanting and all encompassing tones of the autumn season into your home.

Stick around as we guide you through some simple ways of infusing your home with the rich and earthy colours of autumn, from choosing the right paint and home furnishing colours to how best to incorporate them in your interior.

Autumn is a great time to remember one of the four themes we created together with Habitat for our 2023 trend predictions. This is 'Nostalgia Reinvented' and it's the perfect autumnal interior design inspo source. Recreate this in your own home with our Loving Pink paint colour on the walls and our Calming Blue and Passionate Warm White paint colours on the door stripes.

Select your palette.

Autumn is renowned for its abundance of colour, so it's important to take some time to consider which of its hues speak to you. Are you a fiery soul that loves those warm red and oranges or is it the deeper moss greens and forest shades that make your heart sing? Or are you a true maximalist and want it all? Either way, it’s a good idea to explore your vibe so your home reflects your personality and serves you well far beyond the fleeting few months.

As a starter for 10, take a look through our Loving, Mellow and Passionate Collections, focussing in on our yellows, greens and oranges for the ultimate autumnal palette. More specifically, our Loving Green, Loving Orange and Mellow Yellow paint colours make a dream fall colour combo, so feel free to use them around your home however (and as much) as you like.

Name a paint colour that screams 'autumn' louder than our Loving Orange paint colours. Bring on the pumpkins and the blankets and let's get cosy.

Balance with neutrals.

We appreciate that a full-on, bold autumnal symphony isn't for everyone, and actually, balancing a scheme with neutrals can really make those bolder colours sing. Neutral tones such as our our Mellow Neutral, Calming Neutral and Loving Neutral paint colours can provide a soothing backdrop that allows the autumnal shades to shine without overwhelming the space. Heck, if those traditional jewel tone hues aren't for you at all, stick to these warm, earthy tones and you’ll still reap the benefits of their cosy, comforting embrace.

The perfect autumnal colour combination - our Mellow Neutral and Mellow Yellow paint colours. Look at them singing together, paired with a rusty orange sofa and cushions in mustard yellow and forest green. Now, this is what we call a real harmony.

Get paint happy.

Now you’ve selected the types of colours you love, it's now time to consider how you’re going to use them (after all, that's why you’re reading this, right?). So, close your eyes (if you want) and think about how you want to feel in your space and let that drive how and where you’ll use these colours. If you want all in and embrace that maximalist aesthetic, consider painting all surfaces; walls, ceiling, woodwork, furniture in rich, deep tones, layering them in creative ways to envelop the soul and create a cocooning paradise. If that’s too much, consider painting an accent wall or zone an area in a deep, warm shade like our Mellow Orange or Loving Teal paint colours. If you prefer a subtler approach, choose a neutral hue like our Mellow Neutral paint for your walls and incorporate an accent of the autumnal shades you love on woodwork.

Basically, it’s all about the proportions. The more immersive you want the space to feel, the more you should use those rich hues everywhere. Need more calm and light? Opt for an appearance of more neutrals. Job done.

Surprise - not all autumnal paint colours should be in the yellow or orange colour palette. You can create a cosy and cocooning room by using dark, jewel tones like our Loving Teal paint colour here. Stunning.

Texture is king.

Not ready to whip out the paint roller just yet? Textiles can play a significant role in creating a seasonal atmosphere just as much as your walls. Swap out your lightweight summer throws and pillows for heavier, chunkier fabrics in your favourite autumnal shades. But in the name of sustainability, hunt for these gems in local thrift stores and charity shops and make sure to choose items you truly love that will stand the test of time. You could even go the whole hog and make some yourself... yep it’s true, just take a look at #crochettok. The world has gone mad for crafting and we are so here for it. Mindfulness and creatively all rolled into one... genius!

Embrace natural elements.

To enhance that autumnal ambiance in your home (that’s a thing, ok), bring in natural elements like wooden frames, seasonal wreaths, mini pumpkins and dried flowers to add warmth, colour and depth to your space without it costing a small fortune. Grab that chunky scarf, your favourite woolly hat and Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte and live your 00’s American rom-com fantasy to the max. Go on, you know you can’t resist a touch of that cute seasonal charm.

As you can see, adding an autumnal colour palette to your home is a wonderful way to embrace the changing seasons and create a cosy, inviting space to hunker down in. By thoughtfully selecting your colour scheme, incorporating natural elements, and embracing seasonal decor (in a sustainable way, of course), you can infuse your home with the warmth and beauty of autumn that can transcend well into seasons to come.
