Let's talk about something often overlooked when decorating our homes... and yet, something that has the potential to make a huge impact on a space and how we feel in it: the ceiling. Yes, you heard it right! Ceilings are like a blank canvas waiting to be adorned with glorious colour just like any other surface. Call them the 5th wall if you will. So, why not shake things up a bit and give your ceiling the attention it deserves?
The wonderful thing about a colourful ceiling is that it's a way to add personality and colour to a space without it being too scary or overwhelming. A pop of your favourite paint colour on this area means you can still have serenity and calm on the walls but scratches that itch of injecting more colour into your life (which we know you have). It’s a win win in our eyes.
Here are five dopamine-boosting paint colours that will revolutionise the way you experience the ceilings in your home.
If Miami was a home... or, in this case — a spare bedroom. We can't lie — we'd love to spend a night in this colourful heaven, created by Ros @rainbowrosalind with our Friendly Pink, Friendly Blue, Fresh Yellow and Electric Hot White paint colours. A perfect example of an overall neutral scheme with little pops of pastel colour freshness. Yum!
Sky's the limit.
Bring the serenity of the outdoors inside with a soft sky blue paint colour. This calming hue brings a sense of tranquillity and relaxation, making it ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, or any space where you want to create a peaceful atmosphere. Our Serene Blue and Friendly Blue paint colours are ideal choices for this style. Additionally, the great thing about light blue in general is that it's what we call a receding colour, meaning it appears further away to us, creating the illusion of higher ceilings. A great choice for new builds or homes with low ceilings. We love a little paint-supported optical illusion over here.
Mellow Yellow.
Or any yellow, really. We love our Calming Yellow and Mellow Yellow paint colours for a ceiling as their optimism and joy just can’t be denied. Don't believe us? Check out this bathroom ceiling makeover by the talented Emily from @our1935terrace.
The colour yellow is a great choice for a darker space or east and west facing rooms that have a lot of changeable light, as it helps to keep them energised and uplifted at all times of the day. Hallways and kitchens would thank you for a infusing them with a touch of its zingy fun too.
Deep rust orange.
Embrace warmth and earthiness with a deep rusty orange like our Loving Orange paint colour. Perfect for spaces where you want to make a bold statement, such as dining rooms or living rooms, an orange pairs beautifully with neutral-coloured walls (check out our sandy Loving Neutral paint) and creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that's perfect for gathering with friends and family.
As the colour orange is an advancing colour (advancing colours = colours that appear closer to us), its richness is going to feel like a soothing warm hug that cocoons you... and who doesn’t want that? Add a deep rusty orange touch to cornicing too for a gradual transition of colour. If you don’t have any, no worries — just take the colour down onto the walls a little for a sense of character and detail.
Go green.
If there’s one colour we think might actually have been made to adorn a ceiling, this is our phenomenal Passionate Olive Green paint colour. Its warmth provides a feeling of comfort whilst its depth and unique energy means it's an absolute showstopper and feast for the eyes. Green (and especially an earthy olive green) is a great choice in home offices, playrooms and living rooms... pretty much any room where you want to add some serious pizzazz. We promise you: you won't regret it.

White wash.
We get it — white ceilings are a go-to option for many, and for good reason. They create a sense of openness, and a feeling of spaciousness, making any room appear larger than it actually is. The key here though is to choose the right white shade to complement the wall colours. Going for a stark brilliant white is only going to feel harsh next to the wall colour and distract the eye, our top advice is to opt for a white or neutral colour that pairs well with the walls.
Lucky for you, we have a corresponding white or neutral that has been designed to go with each of our paint collections, so you know you’ll create the perfect atmosphere in your space, even if you do want to opt for that traditional ceiling shade.
Now that you have some inspiration, why not take your ceiling to new heights and unleash your creativity? Go ahead, grab that paint roller — your ceiling will thank you for it.
And if you need any help with choosing the colours for your space, simply book a colour consultation with us and we'll sort your colour puzzle in no time. It's easy, it's fun... and there's a free option available too.
