The YesColours green paint colour palette and how to use it

By Iona Bower on

Evoking feelings of hope and a sense of new life, we all need a little bit of green in our homes. It’s a bit special. Whether you’re staring at rolling hills or squinting at the tiniest of weeds growing out of the cracks between paving stones, green is a reminder that nature and hope always persist. It’s also a colour that conjures images of magic, too, from the Green Man to the Emerald City. In pigment terms, green was one of the first colours humans tried to create, being so abundant in nature, but it proved one of the most difficult to produce, with the Romans eventually nailing it (of course) by soaking copper plates in wine to create verdigris.

However, contrary to what Kermit the Frog will tell you, these days it’s actually very easy indeed to be green. There are eleven ‘main’ green colours in the YesColours palette (we’re leaving aside the teals and aquas here to make things simple) and you can use them however you want. But if you’d like a little inspiration, let us introduce you to our greens…

Calming Green.

For walls that make you sigh happily and feel your shoulders drop an inch or two, this green paint colour is relaxing and refreshing at once. It’s a beautiful mix of natural greens like sage and brighter shades such as pistachio, connecting us to nature and lifting our spirits. For that reason, our Calming Green paint shade is a great colour for rooms where you want to tap into biophilic design theory and invite the outdoors inside. This green paint is relaxing enough for calming living rooms and dining rooms and looks chef’s kiss on kitchen cupboards, too. Pair it with one (or more!) of our pink shades for a pretty, uplifting look, or perhaps with a neutral colour or muted shades for a fabulously forestry feel.

Loving Green.

Deep, dark and with a hint of magic, our Loving Green paint colour makes us think of fairytale forests and ancient cultures. It’s difficult for greens to feel cosy but this one is like being wrapped in a (green) blanket with a comforting cup of (green) tea. Again, it works well in living and dining spaces, creating a soulful feel, and if you like a dark bedroom, this green paint provides a dreamy, magical backdrop for a deep, dark sleep.

Serene Green.

With plenty of grey in it, we’d pretty much count our Serene Green paint colour as a neutral, and for that reason, it’s excellent used alongside other greens in the YesColours paint palette. It also pairs well with colours with a bit of pink in them, which picks out the very subtle warm undertones. Quiet and understated, Serene Green won’t shout at you; it’s all about supporting the rest of the cast. Let it sit quietly in a coastal bathroom or loo, or be the backdrop to some dramatic furniture in a grand living space.

Joyful Green.

The YesColours Joyful Green paint colour is a vibrant green shade that will make you jump for joy. The touch of blue in this hue gives it its beautiful jade colour, which adds just a little drama to the lightness of the look. It evokes memories of glazed china and the bright, copper roof of Berlin Cathedral. It would look properly good alongside pinks and reds in an eclectic living space, or alongside bold botanical patterns.

Fresh Green.

As refreshing as a biting into a crunchy apple, our Fresh Green paint colour is a wake-you-up-and-get-you-going shade that brings energy and light to any scheme. We love it in a kid’s bedroom or even nursery, paired with crisp white furniture and neutral furnishings. This energising green paint colour is both optimistic and beautifully simple and will just make you smile each time you look at it.

Friendly Green.

A bright and impactful shade, our Friendly Green paint is all about newness and growth. It’s the green of first shoots, the inside of very young pea pods, and maybe your first pistachio ice-cream of summer.

Friendly Green is an excellent paint colour for a hallway, as it opens up the space to welcome friends and family in. Paired with whites and other neutrals it can be used as an accent colour to lift a more muted space.

Graceful Green.

Our recently launched Graceful Green paint colour is subtle, sophisticated and truly relaxing. This very pale green paint is essentially a soft sage but looks almost aquatic in nature and works beautifully in bathroom schemes, providing a backdrop for quiet contemplation and serene soaking in the tub. It’s also a great paint shade for hallways and landings, bringing subtle colour to small spaces, while reflecting plenty of light.

Mellow Green.

Down-to-earth and softly muted, another brand new green colour in the YesColours palette - Mellow Green, reflects the greens of nature and pairs well with other natural, earthy colours. This paint colour goes anywhere you want to create a chilled-out feel, like lying on the lawn on a summer’s day, looking up at a tree canopy overhead. However, we think its best use is in an office space, bringing with it a sense of quiet study. Pair it with neutral colours and lots of natural materials - wicker, wood and stone, and you'll be able to indulge yourself in a Biophilia-charged space that's rejuvenating, energised and really, really soothing.

Mindful Green.

As green as green gets, our Mindful Green paint colour, created in collaboration with the talented Leigh Johnstone - The Beardy Gardener, is a leafy shade with a yellow undertone. This deep green paint will calm your body and soothe your soul, speaking as it does of oak trees, grassy meadows and cool, ivy-clad walls. Sink into it, and allow it to take you back to nature. It’s a wonderful paint shade to wake up to in a bedroom and would also make for a contemplative backdrop in a work space. But wherever you plaster it, it’s sure to make you feel good.

Passionate Olive Green.

Our Passionate Olive Green is a well-known and well-loved paint colour amongst our home decor community - in fact, it's been so popular that we recently launched it in eggshell finish - perfect for upcycling homeware and furniture, as well as using it in bathrooms and spaces that don't get much natural light (such as a really, REALLY dark hallway).

This stunning olive paint colour is a harmony of yellow and green, combined with the warmth of some red, in order to give it that wonderful vintage feel. Our Passionate Olive Green paint colour works well with whites, greys, dark blues and purples, and you can use it in living rooms and bedrooms to create a feeling of natural warmth. Add some plants in the mix, stir it up and you've got the perfect 'Nature' cocktail.

Electric Mint Green.

One of our bestselling paint colours, our Electric Mint Green paint is our version of Neo-Mint and a hue that will energise you more than a can of Red Bull (tried and tested!)... even though it might not give you wings. We're working on that.

It's a well-known fact that green is the colour of life, growth and harmony. But our Electric Mint Green has its own added dazzling cheerfulness. Like fresh spearmint with a bit of neon thrown into the mix. This green shade is also part of our most recommended paint colour combination - the trio of Electric Blue, Electric Mint Green and Fresh Peach. This is the ultimate recipe for bringing the Majorelle Gardens from Marrakech, Morocco straight into your home.
