How to use warm neutral colours in your home

By Emily Harnasz on

You may not believe it, but we love a neutral here at YesColours. Yes, we have our incredible selection of eye-catching, show-stopping vibrant paint colours, but we are also huge fans of a bloody good neutral, to either pair with those vibrant hues or make a chilled out scheme all of their own.

Warm neutrals, specifically, like beige, taupe, cream, and even soft browns, bring a sense of comfort and sophistication that just can’t be compared. These neutral colours create a soothing backdrop that complements a variety of styles, from modern to rustic to mid century and should never be underestimated.

So here’s our guide to embracing warm neutral colours in your own home and interior.

Beautiful backdrop.

Painting your walls in warm neutral colours is a great way to set the tone and to build your personal style upon, and the best part is they pretty much suit any room and style, so it’s a no-brainer for so many people. Consider our softer Graceful Neutral paint or Loving Neutral paint for warmer spaces to create balance, and our richer Mellow Neutral paint or Calming Neutral paint for spaces that need some serious warming up... we're looking at you, north facing rooms.

Top tip: colour drenching looks amazing with neutrals, but if that’s not your thing, our incredible all-rounder Passionate Warm White pairs with literally every one of our neutral paint colours, so you can keep it ‘traditional’ but still effortless. You’re welcome!

Layer up.

To prevent warm neutrals from feeling flat, we’d advise layering different textures into your scheme to keep things interesting. Think patterned rugs, woven baskets and linen curtains, and you can even consider incorporating warm-toned accents like terracotta pots, wooden furniture, and gold accents to enhance the warm and cosy feel. And, of course, this can also mean layering your warm neutral paint colours too. We currently have a bit of a love affair with Mellow Neutral, Calming Neutral and Passionate Warm White paired together — it’s a total vibe, trust us!

Our Mellow Neutral paint colour can be relaxing AND playful — the best of both worlds. And yes, your pets will love it too.

Colour pop.

It wouldn't be a YesColours guide if there wasn’t a little mention of vibrant colours now, would it? Inspired by our love for Bauhaus design which is all about simplicity, functionality and clean lines, we think adding pops of our bestselling Electric Blue, Electric Red and/or Electric Yellow paint colours in small accents to walls painted in our warm neutrals, such as our Loving Neutral colours for example, would be something rather special and we want an invite to see it immediately.

As nature intended.

Our neutral paint colours take inspiration from the soft and nurturing tones of nature; think beach shells, pampas grass, fresh cotton, the list goes on... So it only seems right to incorporate the transformative powers of plants alongside them.

Plants provide huge benefits to our indoor spaces — not only do they look great, but they can help to lower stress, lift the mood and improve air quality too... a complete win-win! Whilst artificial plants can bring some texture and interest, it's the real deal that’s going to provide the most benefit, so embrace those green fingers and get planting.

Neutrals and greenery go hand in hand and complement each other perfectly. Our Calming Neutral paint colour here is a perfect proof for that.

With their timeless appeal and versatility, warm neutrals really are the perfect colours for creating an inviting, elegant atmosphere for any style or home. So, go ahead and embrace the warmth in full confidence you’re going to love it.
